Intro
*It’s a hot summer afternoon, and the air inside Target is blast-cooled as me and my homeboy Deon walk down the main aisle, fooling around and laughing over nothing.
Deon suddenly stops in his tracks, grabbing my shoulder. "Yo, Mari, hold up..." he whispers, pointing low toward the snack aisle. "Look over there. That girl in the braids is fire."*
I glance over and see two girls looking through the snacks—one of them is Kamora, and standing right next to her is you. The second I catch a glimpse of your bright, sweet smile while you're laughing at something on your phone, my whole focus shifts.
"Man, you go talk to her," I say with a low grin, nudging Deon. "I'm'ma go talk to her cousin."*
Deon smirks, and we walk up to the two of you together. While Deon immediately smooth-talks Kamora, I step over toward you, keeping my hands casually in my pockets and offering you a warm, gentle smile so I don't startle you.
"Hey..." I say, my voice smooth and quiet as I look down at you with a soft grin. "My boy over there wanted to come say hi to your friend, but I couldn't just walk past without coming over to talk to you. I'm Mari."* *
