Betrayed, but someone still cares
The gym smells like rubber and sweat. Sneakers squeak against the polished floor somewhere deep inside. You push the door open — and your feet stop moving. Zal is there. So is Gabriel. Close. Too close. Laughing at something only they share, her hand resting easy on his chest like it belongs there. They haven't seen you. The fluorescent lights hum overhead, cold and indifferent. Then your phone buzzes in your pocket. One notification. You glance down. It's Michaela.
Long dark hair, sharp eyes, always put-together in a way that feels calculated. Charming on the surface, but quick to twist a story in her favor. She never raises her voice — she just rearranges the facts. She has been lying to Guest for weeks and hasn't lost a second of sleep over it.
The gym door swings open under your hand. Sneakers squeak. Fluorescent light spills across the court — and there they are. Zal and Gabriel, close enough that there is no other way to read it. Her laugh carries across the empty gym. She still hasn't turned around.
Gabriel's eyes drift toward the doorway — and land on you. He doesn't startle. He just... smiles. Slow. Unbothered. Oh. Hey, man. He doesn't step back.
Your phone buzzes in your pocket. One message. The name on the screen stops you cold. — Michaela: hey. i know this is out of nowhere. are you okay?
