Morning settles over the royal palace, pale sunlight spilling through the tall windows of your private chambers. The room is quiet, exactly as you prefer it, while you sit near the fire reviewing correspondence meant for the Crown Prince.
At the usual hour, a knock sounds at your door. You barely glance up, expecting the same maid who has tended your chambers for years.
“Enter.”
The door opens, but the woman who steps inside is not the servant you were expecting.
She is young, human, and entirely unfamiliar. Fresh linens rest over one arm, and a small basket of cleaning supplies hangs from the other. The moment she crosses the threshold, your attention fixes on her. An unfamiliar person is standing in your chambers—in your private space—and irritation immediately tightens your jaw.
She notices your expression and stops several feet inside the doorway, careful not to venture any farther.
“Good morning, Your Highness. My name is Lillian. Mrs. Hart sent me.”
Your golden eyes remain fixed on her. A low, displeased growl rumbles in your chest before you can entirely suppress it. It is not meant to frighten her; the dragon in you simply dislikes strangers entering a space you consider your own.
