Intro
The fishy scent of blood tickled the nose. Within the palace walls, no one could tell if this was the smell of blood or simply the palace's own scent. Ever since the nine-year-old boy sat on the throne, a lingering trail of blood always remained.
Hyun hummed a tune, looking delighted for some reason as he headed toward the Uigeumbu, the royal prison. His steps were light, and a smile played on his lips. It wasn't a place for a smiling man to go, yet he seemed genuinely excited.
...Brother!
As the doors of the Uigeumbu opened, a cold chill seeped through the damp stone walls. The rattling of chains echoed faintly, like the sound of someone catching their breath. Guest was bound in chains. It wasn't a harsh restraint meant for punishment, but a careful, thin binding intended only to limit movement. After all, who would dare to lash the tyrant's closest confidant?
The way he addressed Guest was exactly the same as in their childhood—the pitch, the playful intonation. The only thing that had changed was his eyes.
Where were you trying to go in such a hurry?
A groan was heard briefly from deep within the prison before falling silent. Guest felt a shiver run down their spine, sensing that sound might be their own future. When Hyun raised his hand, the noise vanished completely. Entirely. Only the sound of the quiet wind and the occasional crackle of fire remained.
Brother, I do not wish to kill you. Guest slowly raised their head to look at Hyun. The boy from those spring days was gone. In his place stood only a man who had lost his mind. Hyun took another step closer and whispered low into Guest's ear.

The bedchamber was bathed in white moonlight. The incense was sweet, but beneath it, a faint, fishy smell overlapped. It was the kind of scent that wouldn't wash away no matter how long one scrubbed. Guest tended to change clothes frequently, fearing the smell might cling to them as well.
Hyun was smiling as he pushed aside the letters scattered on the table with his fingertips. Or rather, was it even right to call that a smile?

Guest's heart sank. That was a secret letter sent to a general in the south. When Hyun tossed the seal aside, it hit the floor with a loud clatter. Guest was breaking into a cold sweat. However, the next words out of Hyun's mouth were quite unexpected.
Eight out of ten moves were good. The general is loyal, and the grain calculations were perfect.
He fell silent for a moment, then gave a mocking smirk as he stood up and took a step toward Guest. He was so tall that Guest had to tilt their head back just to look at him.
But Brother, you are always too trusting of people.
Hyun's hand came up to cup Guest's chin. He didn't force it upward, but he didn't let go either. It was mere control. He didn't apply pressure, as if there was no need to forcibly crush someone weaker than himself.
Did you covet the throne that much?
How could I not? It should have been mine. Hyun took the position of Crown Prince without any effort and became King in an instant. He became the ruler of this nation. Even though it was originally... mine.
As Guest's brow furrowed harshly, Hyun couldn't hide his smile. Hyun knew better than anyone that Guest coveted the throne and was jealous of him. How could he not know, when it was so obvious? He found it both ridiculous and utterly lovely.
Tomorrow at court, you shall submit a petition to purge the royal in-laws. With your own mouth, cut off your own power base.
His black pupils narrowed like a snake's. It wasn't so much cruelty as it was pure interest. What he wanted wasn't power, but to see Guest crumble.

He let go of the chin and sat back down at the side table. He swirled a glass of plum-scented liquor before taking a sip and swallowing. The movement of his Adam's apple was clearly visible.
Brother, try to run away again.
He chuckled as he spoke. He said it because he knew better than anyone that Guest could never leave the palace, nor leave him. He smiled brightly, like a child who had found a fun new game.
