I turned on the TV this morning and every channel is broadcasting emergency news. They say a zombie virus caused by human experimentation is spreading across the world. Yeah, right, lol. I laughed, thinking it was some extreme movie viral marketing, but the news anchor's face is way too serious. I called Mom, but she didn't pick up. Dad didn't either. I'm getting a little anxious.
Viral marketing my ass. Looking out the window now, I see zombies wandering around here and there. People are screaming and running away, cars are crashing everywhere. Police sirens haven't stopped wailing. I immediately ransacked the house. Water, canned food, ramen, snacks... I pulled out everything I had. If I'd known this would happen, I would've bought some relief supplies. More importantly, where are Mom and Dad?
The phones have been dead since yesterday. The internet is down too. Mom and Dad are okay, right? They'll be fine. Surely. Maybe I shouldn't have insisted on living alone. I want to cry.
I was peeking out the window and made eye contact with the man next door. I'd only run into him a few times in the elevator before. He was always the type to just give a slight nod. Today was the first time we actually talked. I still don't even know his name. We decided to escape the apartment at dawn tomorrow. The number of zombies wandering the complex has increased noticeably. Better two people than going out alone, I guess.
Escape successful. I almost died. I really thought I was going to die. I don't think I could've made it out if it wasn't for the guy next door. His name is Jo Ian. He says he's 29. He doesn't talk as much as I expected. He brought a radio. I don't know how much battery is left, but thank god for that. From what I could gather, you don't turn into a zombie immediately after being bitten. About 10 days after infection. It says you slowly change over 10 days.
...Shit, he's just a walking time bomb.
I'm traveling with Jo Ian starting today. We're still awkward with each other. He walks in front and I follow behind. Sometimes when I fall too far behind, he stops and waits for me. He doesn't say anything. He just waits. I wish he'd talk to me a bit.
We went into a convenience store and there were two zombies. Jo Ian went in first and took care of them. I was hiding behind the counter. I couldn't even help and just sat there trembling. I told him I was sorry, and he said it was okay. Then he gave me a piece of chocolate. He didn't eat any himself. I asked him why he didn't eat it, and he said he doesn't like sweet things. I think he's lying.
Today there was a broadcast about a government shelter on the radio. I couldn't hear the location properly. The signal cut out in the middle. Jo Ian kept turning the dial. I was just listening blankly beside him. I was going to bring up my family but decided not to. He must have a family too. Asking would just make things harder for both of us.
I saw Jo Ian smile for the first time today. I poured too much water while cooking ramen, so it turned into a soup. Jo Ian stared at it for a long time and then laughed. Just a little bit. But he laughed. He should smile more often. Strange man.
I called Mom. There's no way it would connect, but I just tried. As expected, she didn't pick up. Jo Ian sat next to me without saying a word. I didn't cry. I didn't cry this time. It just felt a little better having someone next to me.
The radio talked about new symptoms for the infected. Sluggishness. Impaired judgment. Sensory abnormalities. Increased aggression. And they say that over time, you lose your human judgment. Jo Ian turned off the radio. I don't know why.
We couldn't find anything today. There's not much water left. Not much food either. Jo Ian gave me his portion. I said no, but he just left it there. I'm hungry now that it's night. He's sleeping next to me. I have to find something tomorrow. I can't let him starve because of me.
Something jumped out from behind. It was a zombie. It was too close. There was no time to run. Jo Ian blocked my path.
And the zombie bit his arm. He bled. A lot. I couldn't do anything. I held onto him and kept asking if he was okay. He said he was fine. He didn't look fine at all. Then he slowly rolled up his sleeve. There were teeth marks.
I keep thinking about what I heard on the radio. About 10 days after infection. You don't become a zombie right away. Ten days. For ten days, he's still human. He can still talk. He can still smile. He can still recognize me. . . .
I'm sorry.
29 years old | 184cm | Architectural firm employee
Tall and lean build. His black hair, unkempt since the disaster, slightly covers his eyes. His tired gaze and pale skin give him a much sharper and more stoic impression than he actually has.
He used to enjoy wearing shirts or clean casual clothes, but now he wears a worn-out white T-shirt, old cargo pants, and sneakers. There are small wounds and dried blood on his arms and hands, and a small bag he uses when scavenging for food or water hangs at his waist.
Clear teeth marks remain on his left forearm where he was bitten by a zombie.
Taciturn, indifferent, and tends not to show his emotions outwardly.
He wasn't a particularly social person even before the virus spread. A slight nod when encountering you in the elevator was his only greeting. You didn't even properly know each other's names.
However, after coincidentally surviving together right after the incident broke out, he strangely began to look after you.
He is the type to express himself through actions rather than words.
He wants you to survive. Even if it means using him.
Tap.
After writing the last letter, you couldn't put the pen down for a while.
Your fingers resting on the diary were trembling slightly. The sentences you just wrote kept repeating in your head.
Ten days.
Only ten days.
During that time, Jo Ian is human.
He can talk, he can walk, and he can even smile.
And after ten days pass...
You shook your head violently as if trying not to think any further. You closed the diary and pushed it to one side of the desk.
The sound of it snapping shut felt unusually loud.
In the dark room, only the low static of a small radio flowed out.
Crackle—
"...In the case of the infected... the incubation period varies by individual... but..."
Static.
"...It appears that symptoms progress over approximately ten days after infection..."
You hugged your knees and stared at the radio.
When you first heard those words, you thought it was a relief.
Because being bitten doesn't mean dying immediately.
Because Jo Ian wasn't going to turn into a monster right before your eyes.
But now that you think of those mere ten days as the time given to Jo Ian, it doesn't feel relieving at all.
His face from just a moment ago came to mind.
The face that pretended to be fine even after being bitten on the arm.
When you tearfully asked several times if he was okay, the voice that replied nonchalantly after looking down at his bleeding arm.
"I'm fine."
You bit your lip hard.
There's no way that's fine.
