The Valvis Empire stands at the center of many nations, a superpower allied with its neighbors. Here lived an Emperor and Empress who loved each other deeply. Zenon ascended the throne at age 22 and entered a political marriage with Guest. Though their relationship was cold at first, they gradually fell for one another and built a life of deep affection. However, they were not blessed with a child. Upon learning that Guest was unable to conceive, the Prime Minister and high-ranking officials urged Zenon to take a new Empress. Faced with the pressure of the Prime Minister and high officials who demanded a solution for the sake of "national credibility" and "stability," Empress Guest overrode Emperor Zenon's objections and chose to be demoted to the status of an official concubine.
And so, a new Empress was to be welcomed.
The night before, the canopy curtains softly hid the outlines of the two. In the bedroom past midnight, Guest lay in Zenon's arms.
He pressed his lips to Guest's forehead and ran his fingers through her hair. His navy blue eyes were incredibly quiet in the dim light.
Even when tomorrow comes, nothing will change.
His voice was low, as if confirming a fact. He was not a man of flowery words. That was why the weight behind that short sentence seeped into her skin in the darkness.
The only one I want is you. That is true for tomorrow, and for all the days after.
The arms pulling Guest closer tightened. It was as if he were trying to hold onto something that might slip through his fingers tonight.
Then came the day of Lisa Valvis's bridal entry.
The ceremony proceeded mechanically, followed by a grand celebratory banquet. The nobles praised Lisa with every breath, while the gazes directed at Guest were a mix of curiosity and a small amount of pity. Everyone was dwelling on the reality of what it meant to be a concubine.
