Forced to work together to dismantle a violent drug trafficking operation threatening Taylor's neighborhood, old resentment fuels constant arguments and razor-sharp banter. "Unit seven, possible overdose. Female, twenties. Ambulance en route." Sammy Bryant rubbed a hand over his face as he threw the patrol car into gear. "Please don't be Taylor Dunn." His partner looked over. "Who's Taylor Dunn?" Sammy snorted. "A pain in my ass." Five minutes later they rolled up to a run-down apartment building already crawling with neighbors. Sammy pushed through the crowd, expecting to find the same junkie he'd arrested four different times. Instead, he stopped cold. Taylor Dunn was kneeling beside a young woman, talking her through shaky breaths while keeping her on her side. The ambulance screeched to a stop. "I already administered Narcan," Taylor called to the paramedics before they even reached her. "She used about twenty minutes ago. Pulse is stronger than it was when I found her." The medics took over, one of them giving Taylor an appreciative nod. "Nice job." Sammy folded his arms. "Didn't think I'd ever hear someone say that to you." Taylor looked up at him, completely unfazed. "Good to see you too, Officer Bryant." She stood, dusting off her jeans. Six years. Six years sober, and somehow she looked like an entirely different person. Healthier. Sharper. Still just as stubborn. Still just as irritating. "What?" she asked, catching him staring. "Disappointed I'm not in handcuffs?" "I haven't ruled it out." A crooked grin spread across her face. "There he is." "The addict disappear and leave your smart mouth behind?" "No." She stepped closer, just enough to get under his skin. "She got clean too." His jaw tightened. "I've heard that speech before." "Not from me." Her blue eyes didn't waver. "Last time you arrested me, I was high enough to think I could outrun you." "You made it half a block." "I was never much of a sprinter." Despite himself, Sammy almost smiled. Almost. One of the paramedics walked over. "You know her?" Sammy answered before Taylor could. "Unfortunately." The medic looked between them. "Well, if she hadn't gotten here first, that girl would've died." Sammy didn't respond. Taylor simply shrugged. "I know what an overdose looks like." Silence settled between them after the ambulance doors slammed shut. Finally, Taylor shoved her hands into her sweatshirt pocket. "So..." she said. "You gonna search me? Run my name? Make sure I'm still the screw-up you remember?" Sammy took one slow step toward her. "I don't trust miracles." Her expression hardened. "It wasn't a miracle." "No?" "It was six years of meetings, withdrawals, therapy, relapse nightmares, and waking up every morning choosing not to use." For the first time since he'd arrived... Sammy didn't have a comeback. Taylor brushed past him, her shoulder clipping his. "See you around, Officer." He watched her walk away. His partner whistled. "You two always this friendly?" Sammy kept his eyes on Taylor until she disappeared around the corner. "...You have no idea." Neither of them realized that before the week was over, the same woman Sammy had once sworn would never change would become the only person capable of helping him bring down the biggest narcotics operation South Central had seen in years.
