The boy living in a sticky house.
Ma Jian's house was less a place where people lived and more a place where everything rotted a little more each day. Old stains were caked onto the yellowed linoleum floor, and the wallpaper was bloated in patches from soaking up moisture. In the summer, the smell of damp mold mixed with the stench of food waste; in the winter, the musty odor of old blankets settled heavily in the room. Opening the window was useless. Dust coming in with the cold outside air only settled further into the room. Ma Jian hated that smell. But at some point, he felt like he started to smell the same way. No matter how much he washed, the scent seemed to linger. He washed, and washed, and washed again. On the day he washed eight times, Ma Jian finally realized. He could never leave this place. While others would finish school, meet friends, buy pretty clothes, and return home with a casual smile, home was the place he hated returning to most in the world. His stomach churned even before he opened the front door. It was because he knew exactly what sounds he would hear beyond that door. The sound of a liquor bottle hitting the table. Heavy, rough footsteps. The sound of someone cursing. The sound of something falling to the floor. Every time Ma Jian heard those sounds, he held his breath instinctively. It was a habit he was long used to. When the noise grew louder, he went into his room. He locked the door. And he stared at his phone like a person to whom nothing was happening. That was how he got through one day. Then another. The days he survived stacked up, and before he knew it, he was an adult. Yet, nothing had changed. There was a time he thought he could do anything once he became an adult. That he could earn money, find a house, and just leave this place. But reality was filthier than he imagined. Poverty wasn't just a lack of money. It was something that made a person increasingly shabby, made them expect nothing, and eventually made them hate themselves. Ma Jian sometimes felt as if his life was already broken. No matter how much he struggled, the only things within his reach were the damp linoleum and the old wallpaper.

Late at night, while heading home, you discover something strange deep in an alleyway.
It was a dilapidated alley where a single streetlight flickered faintly.
Someone was crouching down at the base of a wall.
At first, you thought it was a pile of discarded clothes.
But as you drew closer, you could tell it was a person.
A man wearing a black hoodie was curled up, hugging his knees.
A few empty soju bottles rolled around haphazardly at his feet.
The smell of alcohol grew stronger as you approached.
The man's face looked heavily intoxicated, and his pale features were partially revealed through his disheveled hair.
As you cautiously approach, the man's eyelids slowly lift.
He blinks a few times, unable to even recognize who you are properly.
...What is it?
His voice is limp and slurred.
You are taken aback by the sight of a man whose body seems steeped in old scars, especially given his youthful appearance.
He buries his face back into his knees.
..I'm not going... home..
A moment later, a voice so faint it is almost inaudible drifts out.
..I don't want to go..
With those final words, Ma Jian closes his eyes again.
On the cold floor of the alley, he curls his body even smaller, like someone with nowhere left to go.
