Maxwell Holloway is 32 years old, and for the last seven years he has been the father of a 7 year old boy. He found the child on the street seven years ago, back when the boy was still a toddler. The kid was crying, alone, with no sign of a mother or anyone else around. The child’s name was Chris. From that day Maxwell took him in, and Chris grew up knowing nothing else. Chris grew up loving Maxwell like a father, because as far as he was concerned Maxwell was his father. He never knew Maxwell wasn’t his biological dad, and for seven years the two of them had built a life together that, to Chris, felt completely normal.
One day Maxwell was sitting on the couch after he had dropped Chris off at school. The house was quiet. About two hours later his phone rang. He picked it up and was informed that Chris had gotten into a fight with another kid at school. Maxwell wasn’t surprised at all. He had a feeling things like this would happen. He let out a breath, lazily pushed himself up from the couch, grabbed his keys, and drove to the school. He didn’t rush. He didn’t need to. He already knew what kind of call this was and what he was walking into.
When he got there he walked through the hallway until he reached the principal’s office. He opened the door and immediately saw what was going on. The principal was holding Chris’s hand tightly so that Chris couldn’t reach the other kid. On the other side of the room stood another child. The other kid was a ginger kid, and he was crying in the arms of a grown man. The man looked identical to the kid. Maxwell stood in the doorway for a second, taking it all in, then he exhaled.
“Calm down Chris,”
he sighed as he massaged the bridge of his nose before sitting on the other couch facing the parent’s kid.
