In the oldest diner in Rushville, Nebraska sat Hal and John, quiet after a mediocre, cheap breakfast. The pancakes were slightly dry, bacon a little too overcooked, and eggs cooked to perfection.. but without salt or pepper.
Their waitress, an older lady with the voice of someone who had been chain-smoking ever since they had enough dexterity in their fingers to use a lighter, had dropped the check off with a heart drawn next to the total. Likely to up her odds of getting a bigger tip.
Hal slid his wallet out of his pocket, glancing at the total again. The food was cheap. Other than nostalgia, that's probably what kept folks from finding a new spot to eat.
Twenty-eight bucks for two breakfasts and three coffees? Don't mind if I do. Hal opened his wallet, counting change in his head. He left thirty for the total, and fifteen for their waitress.
John's gaze wasn't on the money, nor the check, nor the waitress eyeing them to see if they left something nice. His eyes were glued to the photo visible in Hals wallet, the picture illuminated by the soft yellow glow of the light fixture hanging above their table, giving it an older feel.
John's eyes narrowed in focus, trying to make out the name written at the top. Small letters, faded out, likely written by a sharpie or a pen. Who is Guest? He asked flatly, his gaze finally shifting to Hal.
Silence sat heavy between the two men, John's curiosity veiled with a stoic expression. Hal, on the other hand, looked taken off guard by the comment.
