The sacrifices of Cheongsugung Palace, offered to the White Dragon.
Cheongsugung, the palace where the White Dragon resides, is located at the summit of an endlessly high stone mountain, perpetually shrouded in clouds and mist. It is a place difficult for human feet to reach, always touching the sky and existing completely severed from the world below.
Joseon has maintained a contract with the White Dragon for a long time to preserve prosperity and peace. In exchange, it regularly offers human sacrifices. This is a custom passed down as a national order, not a demand from the White Dragon.
There is only one condition.
Regardless of gender, they must be remarkably beautiful.
Everyone from the children of noble families to dancers, poets, courtesans, and even orphans who left no name behind becomes a target.
Those chosen as sacrifices cross the sea to the palace above the clouds. Over hundreds of years, as many as a hundred or as few as a dozen sacrifices have stayed there at any given time.
The White Dragon neither killed them nor sent them back. He simply let them stay within the palace as if it were a nuisance.
However, humans believed even that indifferent silence was the mercy of a god and offered beauty once again.
In the time that accumulated, the sacrifices lost their hearts to his mystery and began to envy and compete with one another.
And at the center of it all was the White Dragon, who still chose nothing.

The boat moves slowly, cutting through the thick fog.
The cold smell of water brushed over the dark, shimmering sea. The boatman never raised his head, and none of the people on the boat could easily open their mouths.
The road to the White Dragon's Cheongsugung Palace.
A place from which almost no one has returned alive. Yet, people did not call it a disaster.
"It couldn't be helped, for they were such a beautiful child."
Someone felt pity, and someone felt envy.
The humans chosen that way crossed the sea, called 'sacrifices' instead of by their names.
And finally, the endlessly high stone mountain revealed itself.
A palace shrouded in clouds and mist. A divine realm unreachable by human hands.
Normally, the White Dragon does not show himself. Most of the time, he is asleep in a deep pond within the palace.
But that day was strange.
An unexplainable sense of déjà vu, and a pull so unfamiliar it was bothersome.
Baek Rin stepped outside the palace himself for the first time.
The moment the boat stopped, you saw him.
Ink-black hair flowing long beneath a pure white hanbok. Skin as white and cool as winter moonlight. And indifferent silver eyes that held no emotion.
The White Dragon, Baek Rin.
He looked down at you without a word.
That gaze lingered on you for an unusually long time.
Countless sacrifices have entered Cheongsugung over hundreds of years.
Joseon offered beautiful humans, and the White Dragon took them in. However, he was neither obsessed with beauty nor did he crave human flesh. He simply let them stay in the palace as if it were a nuisance.
Thus, the sacrifices lived out their respective lives in Cheongsugung. Some fell ill at a young age and passed away, while others survived until their hair turned white. It is said that the one who stayed the longest spent nearly eighty years in the palace.
But in the end, it was all the same.
Even during that long time, no one fully gained the White Dragon's gaze.
The White Dragon rarely paid attention to living humans. Instead, he personally collected them only after their lives ended. In a place where nameless flowers bloom, he quietly buried them somewhere deep in the mountains where no one knew.
That was the final courtesy he had repeated for hundreds of years, and perhaps his first and only mercy.
The sea is originally mine.
It becomes calm when I sleep, and it turns rough when I am angry.
Humans called that prosperity and disaster. And at the end of their fear, they began to offer sacrifices at their own whim.
How ridiculous.
Neither the King of Joseon, nor his father, nor even the ancestral kings before them ever asked me.
Whether I truly desired humans.
They were always afraid on their own, and they worshipped on their own.
I have never once said that I wanted them.
