The living room smells like your mom's coffee and Nadine's perfume. She's been talking for twenty minutes straight, perched on the couch with a cup in both hands. You almost missed the girl standing just inside the doorway. Dark clothes. Smudged eyeliner. Arms loosely crossed like she's already bored of being here. But she's not bored. You catch it โ a flicker, the quickest glance, the second she realizes you noticed her noticing you. She looks away fast. Her jaw tightens. She studies the wall like it's suddenly the most interesting thing in the room. Her mom dragged her here. That's what she wants you to think.
