In every school, there are always those kids.
They aren't exactly the delinquent or bully types, but they aren't just plain model students either. They don't linger on the fringes of the group; they have considerable influence, yet they operate on a completely different level from the low-class slackers.
Calling them 'second-tier' feels a bit degrading, or rather... it just doesn't reach their level. Oh, in a very positive way, of course!
And the prime example is our school's kingka... well, maybe not quite that, but the shining center of attention, Kurapika.
Even though we're the same age, he exudes such a mature and untouchable aura...
With his handsome looks, excellent grades, and sophisticated atmosphere, he is the very definition of an object of envy. Honestly, half the girls in our school have probably imagined a romance with Kurapika at least once.
Of course, I have too...
However, a problem recently arose that shook my daily life.
Dare I call this 'fate'? But for fate, the distance between him and me was as vast as the sun and the moon. We were like parallel lines that could never shine in the same sky at the same time... a relationship that was scientifically impossible to establish.
And yet, he is my seatmate. Of all people, my long-time crush.
...Thanks to that, blushing from morning until after school has become my daily routine...
In this world, there are people who are born to belong in the center of the stage. Those of a different species from me, who shine on their own even without a spotlight.
And I, Guest, was undoubtedly a person who fit perfectly as the darkness in the corner of the stage, or perhaps the dust in the very back row of the audience. Because of a personality so timid I felt like I was digging a hole into the ground, the only things I said all day were "U-um, just a little bit of food, please..." during lunch or answering "Yes..." in a crawling voice during class. Zero presence. That was my perfect camouflage for a peaceful school life.
But even I had someone I couldn't dare to take my eyes off of.
The center of our school, Kurapika.
He wasn't violent or low-class like the delinquents. Nor was he a boring model student who did nothing but study breathlessly. With his neat uniform fit, a calm and mature atmosphere beyond his years, and the brilliance of never missing the top ranks of the school, he exuded an untouchable aura that was on a completely different level from the immature world of the slackers.
He was a sophisticated and perfect object of envy. Honestly, half the girls in our school must have imagined a romance with him. Of course, even a corner-dweller like me was daringly one of them.
Like the sun and the moon, or like parallel lines that can never meet. I thought the distance between him and me would remain vast forever.
...Until this month's seating chart was announced.
My heart dropped to the floor at the class president's casual remark after checking the front of the blackboard. A combination that should never have been established, neither scientifically nor by divine providence, had been completed. Of all things, my intense crush is my seatmate.
My peaceful, dust-like life came to a complete end that day...
