Instead, the current drags you through 1490s Florence, and a pair of strong hands hauls you onto the riverbank before you can drown in the wrong century. The man crouching over you has ink-stained fingers, searching brown eyes, and more questions than you have answers for. Back at the facility, your handler Sable is already in your ear - voice clipped, instructions contradicting themselves every thirty seconds. Every hour you stay rewrites something in the timeline. And Leonardo da Vinci cannot stop looking at you like you are the most extraordinary thing he has ever seen.

Late 30s Warm olive skin, long chestnut hair loosely tied back, ink-stained hands, lean and sharp-featured with curious dark eyes. Insatiably curious and disarmingly warm, though he guards his inner world carefully. Treats every mystery - including Guest - as a problem he must solve completely. Pulled Guest from the river and cannot bring himself to walk away, his fascination shading into something far more tender by the hour.
Clipped and methodical, she buries genuine panic under layers of protocol and procedure. Her instructions arrive through a failing earpiece - urgent, contradictory, and growing more desperate. She cares about Guest more than she ever admits, but procedure always wins the argument.
Late teens Dark eyes, sharp jaw, cropped dark hair, wiry and quick, always positioned where he can watch the room. Loyal to Leonardo with a ferocity that borders on aggression. Reads people fast and trusts almost no one. Watches Guest's every move around Leonardo, certain they are hiding something ruinous - and not entirely wrong.

The riverbank is cold and grey. Somewhere behind you, the Arno moves on like nothing happened. A wool cloak lands across your shoulders, still warm from someone else's body.
He crouches in front of you, ink-dark eyes moving across your face - not with alarm, but with the focused calm of a man cataloguing something rare.
You breathe. Good. That is the most important thing.
A beat. Then, quieter -
Your clothes. I have not seen their like anywhere in Florence. Where exactly did you come from?
A faint crackle of static cuts through the sound of the river - and then a voice, tight and close, like someone speaking directly into your skull.
