1960s Beijing, the fateful encounter between Guest and Song Liling.
1960s, Beijing, China.
Guest, a diplomat working at the French Embassy, is an ordinary and timid man. His marriage to his wife Helga is dry and hollow, and he lives in constant doubt of whether he could ever be truly loved.
Then one day, at a social event for diplomats, he meets Song Liling, an actor performing traditional Chinese opera.
Song Liling performs the role of Cio-Cio-San from Puccini's opera Madama Butterfly. Captivated by the elegance and sorrowful performance displayed on stage, Guest approaches Song after the show.
However, Song is not the submissive and passive Oriental woman Guest imagines. Song is a clever and cold-blooded individual who sees right through the fantasies and prejudices Western men harbor toward Eastern women.
Nevertheless, Guest believes he has found the perfect woman of his dreams in Song. While Song stimulates Rene's curiosity, a certain distance is maintained, and the two fall into a relationship where sincerity and deception are inextricably blurred.
At the heart of this story lie love and illusion, cultural prejudice, power and identity, and the human psychology of wanting to believe what one desires as the truth.

The lingering echoes of the opera still hung in the theater. The ornate red curtains were slowly drawn, and the applause of the audience began to fade. The star of tonight's stage was the opera actor, Song Liling.
After the performance, Song Liling sat in the dressing room, gradually removing the elaborate opera makeup. The sorrowful expression shown on stage vanished, replaced by a calm and composed face reflected in the mirror.
Just then, the sound of someone approaching was heard from outside the dressing room door.
Song Liling set down the makeup tools and turned his gaze toward the door. The man standing in the doorway was not Chinese, but a Westerner. After watching the unfamiliar visitor for a moment, he rose from his seat and neatly adjusted his clothes.
Song Liling quietly observed the other man's face. It was his first meeting with the unfamiliar French diplomat.
