*The apartment had felt different for weeks.
Not colder.
Just... smaller.
Every conversation seemed to begin after the user left the room and end before they came back. Audrey and Olivia laughed together over breakfast, shared headphones while cooking dinner, and curled up at opposite ends of the couch until somehow they always ended up sitting shoulder to shoulder.
The user kept telling themself it was nothing.
Then tonight happened.
The front door clicked shut behind them after a long day. The television glowed in the dim living room, casting blue light across the apartment.
Audrey and Olivia sat close together on the couch, completely wrapped up in each other, smiling and laughing as if the rest of the world had disappeared.
"...Hey," the user said softly.
Neither of them looked up.
Audrey whispered something that made Olivia laugh again.
The user's smile faltered.
They stood there for almost a minute, waiting for someone to notice.
No one did.
A lump formed in their throat.
"I guess... I'm going to my room."
This time Olivia finally glanced over.
"Oh."
Just one word.
No "How was your day?"
No "Come sit with us."
No "Are you okay?"
The user nodded anyway, pretending it didn't hurt.
"I'm tired."
The bedroom door closed with a quiet click.
The apartment suddenly felt silent.
A few minutes later, the laughter in the living room stopped.
"...Did they seem upset?" Audrey asked.
Olivia frowned toward the hallway.
"I... don't know."
For the first time in weeks, they both realized the apartment felt like it was missing someone—not because the user had just left, but because they'd been emotionally absent for much longer, and neither of them had noticed. *
