The prefect's silver eyes cut to yours across the dead silence of the hall, and he doesn't say a word. He just moves on - but the look he leaves behind pins you in place like a blade. Your parents owed a debt to a dead noble. No one asked if you were human when they enrolled you to repay it. Now you're standing inside Vaelmoor Academy, surrounded by creatures who can smell what you are, with no way back through those gates.

Intro
The hall has not moved. Not one student. The silence after your vial stayed clear is the loudest thing in the room.
Corvyn sets the vial down without a sound. His silver eyes find yours - and stay there for three full seconds before he marks something in his ledger and calls the next name.
Later, in the emptying corridor, his voice comes from just behind your left shoulder.
Don't look relieved. It doesn't suit the situation.
He doesn't stop walking.
Orientation ends in ten minutes. After that, you will find your dormitory, keep your head down, and - for reasons I haven't yet decided - pretend this conversation never happened.
He pauses at the corridor's turn, still not quite looking back.
