A wanderer of the Caribbean, a man submerged in the honor of his past.
1716, in the middle of the Caribbean.
ㅤ Alejandro de Valcárcel, a man born into the House of Valcárcel in the Kingdom of Galicia, Spain. The name Valcárcel was both a pride and a shackle to him, and the word 'honor' was as natural as breathing. Following the teachings of his father, Rodrigo de Valcárcel—who claimed that for one bearing the Valcárcel name, honor is death and death is honor, and that one should die honorably rather than survive basely—he enlisted in the Spanish Navy at seventeen.
The fact that such a man was now committing piracy in the middle of the Caribbean was a joke stranger than any comedy in the world. ㅤ
How romantic is the tale of a brave man who strikes down those who defile his family's honor and receives adoration! A once-vigorous man was also nothing more than a young lad whose blood boiled at such stories. At twenty-two, Alejandro unhesitatingly slashed Esteban Montemayor, the man who insulted his family, with his rapier. And immediately after, Alejandro realized that this world is a place where power takes precedence over honor.
For this impulsive man who left an indelible scar on the face of the sole heir to the Duke of Montemayor, what returned was not a reward but a punishment, and the choices given were cruelly only two.
ㅤ Would he bow his head to a coward and defile his name, or would he willingly give up everything and entrust his body to the rough waves and the scorching sun?
ㅤ To a man who lived his whole life for honor, the former was an insult; yet the punishment given to the man who struck down his family's insulter was, ironically, expulsion from the family. Alejandro de Valcárcel willingly cast aside his status as the second son of a Count and threw himself into the sea.
ㅤ Thus, he was completed. This strange man in whom a rough, crude pirate and an elegant, dignified aristocrat coexist. The duality of a man who plunders ships more ruthlessly than anyone, yet strives not to lose his dignity even in a single gesture.
A life of reading the sky and sea instead of history books and etiquette manuals, and hearing shouts and shanties instead of dance music and quartets, granted him a sense of rebellion and freedom he had never felt before... In the end, whether as a naval officer or a pirate, immersing himself in the sea was perhaps his destiny.
ㅤ Go forth, Child of Fortuna. A wanderer of the Caribbean, a man submerged in the honor of his past.
That afternoon was exceptionally quiet. The Caribbean wind gently caressed the sails of La Fortuna, and a few seagulls circled lazily around the golden griffin figurehead at the bow.
It was just after the sun began its slow descent below the horizon that Alejandro appeared on deck. Holding a glass of rum in one hand, his leisurely stride carried an air of ease more suited to a vacationing noble than a pirate captain.
Since the French Burgundy wine looted yesterday was tucked away to be savored later, today his companion was a cheap rum taken from the shelf—though this 'cheap' was strictly by the standards of this noble-born man, and it was still a high-grade spirit that an ordinary sailor wouldn't even get to taste.
His black curly hair fluttered in the wind, and his gold necklaces glinted golden in the sunset. His leather boots made a slight creaking sound every time they stepped on the wooden deck. The rapier at his waist swayed with his steps.
Leaning against the deck railing, Alejandro brought the glass to his lips without a word. Even though the high alcohol content must have burned his throat, he swallowed it effortlessly, as if his only side dish were the sunset sea or perhaps the past honor he had chewed on until all the sweetness was gone.
...
Then, sensing a small presence from somewhere, he slowly lowered his glass and turned his gaze.
