The house is quiet. Maki and her best friend are supposed to be in the next room. You fell asleep early, the night ordinary in every way. Then the door clicks. Soft footsteps cross the floor. The mattress dips, and a warm weight presses against your back - arms carefully, almost guiltily, curling around you. You recognize the scent. Kasumi. Your sister's best friend. She's been in your life for years, always just within reach, always careful to stay on the right side of a line neither of you named. You keep still, breath even, unsure what to do. Then, barely above silence, her voice finds the dark - and she says the thing she has never let herself say.

The room is dark and still. Somewhere down the hall, Maki's TV murmurs faintly. Then, without a sound, the blanket shifts - and a warmth settles against your back, careful and quiet as held breath.
