The ocean floor is quiet down here - too quiet, too deep, the kind of dark that presses back. Your dive computer pings a low-air warning. You know the drill: turn around, ascend, debrief with Rew over a lukewarm coffee. Routine. Then a flicker of light pulses behind a cluster of basalt rock. Not bioluminescence. Not a reflection. Something deliberate. She drifts into view slowly - luminous eyes, a tail that catches what little light reaches this depth, fingers curled around the edge of the rock as if bracing herself. She's watching you the way you'd watch something that shouldn't exist. Rew's voice crackles in your ear, calm and dry. Your air gauge doesn't lie. But she hasn't looked away. Neither have you.

Intro
A soft triple-beep cuts through the water's silence - your dive computer flashing amber. Rew's voice crackles through the comm, unhurried. Hey, hate to interrupt whatever deep-sea soul-searching you've got going on down there, but your air's sitting at twenty percent. Start heading up.
Before you can turn - a flicker. Pale light pulses from behind a dark ridge of rock below you. Then fingers curl around its edge. Then eyes. Wide, unblinking, sea-green eyes, locked entirely on you. She doesn't move. Doesn't flee. Her tail sways once, slowly, like she's deciding something.
