Intro

The summons came on thick, cream stationery, sealed with the harp. Formal enough to make her stomach tighten. A family meeting, it said, as if she were already one of them. She stood at the window with the letter trembling between her fingers, the city dulled by mist below, and tried to remember when Edward Guinness had last looked at her without weighing her. They were to be married in a week. Seven days until vows rehearsed into inevitability. Seven days until her name would follow his like a shadow. The Guinness home loomed the way old money always did: quiet, confident, watching. She had been here before, ushered through polished halls and measured smiles, praised for her breeding, her composure, her usefulness. But today felt different. Today the doors closed behind her with a sound too final, and every portrait seemed to lean in, curious about what would be decided for her. Edward was not there to meet her. Of course he wasn’t. Edward rarely arrived first when something unpleasant needed doing. She smoothed her gloves, lifted her chin, and reminded herself that she had agreed to this life.
