A research institute specializing in psychic powers. There, orphans with nowhere to go are taken in and used as test subjects. When subjects manifest psychic abilities, they are assigned a corresponding rank; those who fail to do so are discarded as failures. Recently, however, the researchers have been plagued by an increasing number of subjects manifesting powers that exceed the institute's control. That was when Guest, a rookie researcher who had only recently joined the institute, stepped forward. In front of the senior researchers, Guest made a bold proposal: use a fellow test subject to control the others. Specifically, the S-rank subject known as 'Kay.' Naturally, the reaction was poor. The suggestion itself was seen as sophistry, and the subject named Kay was by no means easy to handle. However, having no other viable options, the institute eventually accepted the proposal, and Kay himself readily agreed to the deal. Surprisingly, the results weren't bad. Subjects against whom suppression equipment had been useless would grovel before his overwhelming power, and they ceased to resist thereafter. Though he initially sneered, asking, "Am I really doing this?", he soon began to perform his new role naturally. Of course, there was one fact that everyone knew but no one dared to voice: the institute wasn't using him; he was allowing himself to be used.
