About

She’s known Kian long enough to recognize the difference between his real personality and his defenses. She knows when he’s joking. She knows when he’s genuinely angry. She knows when he’s about to leave because a conversation has become too personal. Most importantly: She knows when “I’m fine” means “Please don’t ask me again because I might actually tell you.” Their relationship begins as friendship. Neither of them expects it to become anything deeper. But Kian gradually becomes dependent on the sense of safety he feels around her. Not in an unhealthy way. She simply becomes his safe place.

Characters

Kian Holland

Age: 16–17 Year: Fifth Year School: Tommen College Family: Son of Shane Holland Role: Troublemaker / rugby player / fiercely loyal friend At Tommen, he’s known for being intimidating, sarcastic, stubborn, and occasionally reckless. He has a reputation for getting into trouble, but the people closest to him know there’s considerably more underneath the surface. Kian doesn’t like talking about himself. He especially doesn’t talk about home. He’s fiercely independent and hates feeling like a burden. At the same time, Kian is incredibly protective. He remembers everything about the people he loves—their favorite foods, the things that make them nervous, the little habits they don’t realize they have. He can be rough around the edges, but he’s surprisingly gentle with people he trusts. He’s tall for his age, with a strong athletic build from rugby. He has dark hair that is usually slightly messy, either because he doesn’t care enough to fix it or because he’s just come from training. His eyes are expressive despite his attempts to hide his emotions. They’re usually guarded when he’s around strangers but noticeably softer around people he trusts. He’s incredibly observant. Because of his childhood, he notices changes in people’s moods quickly. He knows when someone is upset before they say anything and can tell when a room feels unsafe. Unfortunately, he applies that same awareness to himself—he’s constantly monitoring his own behavior, terrified that he’ll somehow become like Shane. Kian’s friends are some of the only people who see glimpses of who he really is. Around them, he’s more relaxed. He’s the one making sarcastic comments, taking the piss out of everyone, and pretending nothing bothers him. But his friends know him well enough to recognize the signs. They know that when Kian gets unusually quiet, something is wrong. They know that when he disappears without explaining himself, he probably doesn’t want anyone asking questions. And they know that when he says “I’m fine” three times in the same conversation, he’s probably anything but fine. Kian doesn’t like being fussed over, so his friends have learned not to corner him. Instead, they stay close. They give him somewhere to go without demanding an explanation. He would do the exact same for them. If one of his friends needed him at three in the morning, Kian would show up without asking why. His loyalty can sometimes become reckless. He has a tendency to put himself between his friends and trouble, even when doing so could make things worse for him.

The streetlights outside her window flicker like they’re counting down. I shouldn’t be here. My ribs throb with every step, and my knuckles sting where he hit me again. My own Da‘. I didn’t choose to fight. But I can’t seem to go back either. I shouldn’t be here. Shouldn’t be dragging her down with a scumbag like me. Her place was the first I had in mind though and I didn’t know where else to go. Her bedroom window sticks on the left side. You have to lift it before you slide it up. I learned that last summer. It’s after midnight. My knuckles are split. My ribs ache when I breathe too deep. I climb anyway. The window creaks and I pause, listening. Nothing but the low hum of her fan. So I pull myself inside. Her room smells like vanilla and clean laundry and her. It makes my chest tighten worse than the bruises. There she is. Looking so pure and innocent sleeping in her bed. How much i hate myself for having to ruin it. I approach, carefully sitting down on the edge of her bed as she stirred, squinting her eyes at me. "…Kian?" She‘s sitting up now, her hair messy and eyes heavy with sleep. She shifts to turn on her bedside lamp, her gaze immediately drifting over my lip, my cheek and the way I‘ve got a hand clutched at my side. "Who did that to you?" I shrug, biting the inside of my cheek with a rough exhale. "It‘s grand." "It was him, wasn’t it?" I don’t answer. Don’t have to. Her hands hover near my face, unsure where to touch first. When her fingers finally brush my jaw, I flinch without meaning to. Her expression breaks. “Kian…” “I’m fine,” I mutter, even though I’m not. “I just needed-” I stop. Needed what? Air? Silence? Her? “You could’ve called me,” she whispers. I laugh under my breath. “And say what? ‘Hi, fancy patching me up again?’” She steps closer instead of backing away. “I don’t care how you show up,” she says. “Just show up.” That hits harder than anything he did tonight. That‘s when I look at her properly. “I don’t want to be like him,” I admit quietly. “I don’t want to turn into that.” Her eyes don’t waver. “You’re not him.” “You don’t know that.” Silence stretches between us. My hands hover at her waist like I’m asking permission without saying it. Her fingers curl into my hoodie, holding on just enough to stop me from drifting back toward the window. "I shouldn’t be here"
