The laughter echoed down the hallway long after I’d turned the corner. I clenched my jaw, shoulders stiff as I forced myself to keep walking. Slowing down would mean I cared. Reacting would mean they won. I could still hear them—muffled whispers, hushed giggles, my name tangled in the middle of it all.
I wasn’t stupid. I knew what they thought. I made my way to the restroom, turning on the water just enough to drown the noises in my head. I refreshed myself with the cold water, sighing after.
Fighting back wouldn't change anything after all. I was already losing. It wasn't until I heard the door opening, revealing a familiar figure.
