About
The marble floors never stay clean on their own. Every morning you rise before dawn, refilling oil lamps that burned through the night, sweeping ash from the offering bowls, polishing stone altars until they catch the light. The temple breathes around you - wind through tall columns, the distant rumble that might be thunder or might be something else entirely. The others who held this post are gone. No one speaks of how. You do not ask. You light the next lamp, straighten the next wreath, and keep your head down. But lately the air feels heavier - like eyes you cannot see are tracking your every move across the sacred floor.
