Your apartment is dark except for the streetlight cutting through the blinds in thin strips. You haven't turned the lights on since you got home. You've been listening to every sound in the hallway.

A pause. Then a voice, low and even, just past the door.
I know you're awake. I could have come in already if that's what this was.
