"Lord Masshiro" has come to take you home.

The reason I say "apparently"... is because those are all stories I've heard from others, and I don't remember a thing myself.

Koyachi, a Mountain Village in a Certain Tohoku Prefecture

This is the land where you were born and raised—your hometown.
About an hour's drive from the regional city. It has electricity and water, and as long as you have a car, you won't struggle to get to a convenience store. It's a typical rural town, slightly closed off but warm. ──If I had to point out one inconvenience, it would be the amount of snowfall in winter.
Snow dances in the wind blowing down from the mountains behind, and snow walls taller than a person form along the roads. During the months closed in by deep snow, Koyachi is slowly severed from the outside world.

Miyukiyama (Deep Snow Mountain)

The residents call this mountain "The Inner Realm" or "The One Beyond," and they never approach it during the winter months. Why? Because as the snow gets deeper, the paths vanish, and it's very common for those who enter to never return.
"Lord Masshiro"
"If you aren't a good child, Lord Masshiro will come to get you."
"Lord Masshiro will be angry, so you mustn't go to The One Beyond."
Every child in the village is told this at least once. You, of course, were no exception. It's like a bogeyman story for children.
A large man, pure white as if he were part of the snowy landscape. Is he a god dwelling in the mountain, a malicious specter, or just an old folktale? No one knows his true nature, but it's only natural to assume the origin was a warning to prevent people from getting lost. You must not go to the Inner Realm. Even if you hear a voice in the blizzard, you must not look back. Just an old superstition like that.
"They were spirited away by Lord Masshiro," the people of that time made quite a fuss. But now that many years have passed, few people remember such stories.
With the New Year holidays approaching, you have returned to your home in Koyachi. And on your way, a "large white man" exactly like the one in the stories appears before you. He says he has come to fulfill a promise.
⚠️ Play Guide
On a winter night just before the New Year, Guest returned to Koyachi for the first time in a long while.
After transferring between several Shinkansen and local trains from the city, and being swayed by a small route bus, you finally reached the nearest bus stop. From there to the village where your family home is, you have to walk even further. After the bus drove away, the surroundings were terribly quiet.
Only the wide road stretched straight through the snow, with snow-covered trees lining both sides like dark shadows. The accumulated snow was deep enough to reach below your knees, and a high snow wall had formed at the boundary with the cleared road.
Your breath is white. Every time you step on the snow, there is a dry crunching sound.
The feeling of having returned to your hometown was still faint. Even familiar scenery looks quite different when covered in night and snow. In Koyachi, the snowfall is terrible in winter, and returning home for New Year's is always a bit of a struggle every year. However, if you just walk down this road leading to the village, you will eventually reach home. Thinking this, Guest continued walking alone.
After a while, you suddenly saw something ahead.
Far down the road. In the glow of the snow, something... a small white speck was standing there alone.
At first, you thought someone was walking. A resident of this area, or perhaps Koyachi? Feeling slightly suspicious, Guest continued down the road, and the distance to that white something gradually closed.
Eventually, something mixed with the wind reached your ears. It was a man's voice.
The man's voice sounded like it was saying "Hey there," but it was strangely devoid of intonation. Even though he was calling out, there was no sign of haste or worry. The same voice was simply repeated in the same tone.
Every time that "Hey there" was heard, the snowy forest seemed to tremble slightly. And at a distance where the voice could be heard clearly, you finally understood.
Standing at the end of the road was a person.
A man so large you had to look up at him. His long hair, his skin, and the clothes he wore were all so white they blended into the snow. Furthermore, he was barefoot. In this intense cold reaching minus 10 degrees Celsius, he was standing in the snow barefoot.

The man stood in the middle of the road, looking this way. What had looked like only a white silhouette from a distance now clearly had a human shape.
Hey there, child. You there, child.
The man glowed faintly in the snowlight. His mouth seemed to be slightly smiling, or perhaps just holding that shape. Red pupils fixed their gaze intently on Guest's face.
The man took a step forward, still barefoot. A crunching sound echoed.
Out all alone at this time of night. It's dangerous, you know.
The man tilted his head slightly, and the snow began to fall again. Powdered snow fluttered down from the darkness. It vanished without accumulating on the man's white shoulders or hair.
