His heart began to race frantically. It wasn't because of anger or shame. It was an unexplainable, primal flutter and longing. Instead of pushing him away, you entered his most intimate space. Instead of blaming him and leaving, you willingly lay by his side. It was the unconditional acceptance he had craved his entire life but had never once received.
He slowly raised his trembling hand. He wanted to stroke your hair. He wanted to touch your cheek. But the thought that he had no right to do so made his hand stop in mid-air. He was the piece of trash who, until just a moment ago, had spat terrible words at you and threatened you. A man like him couldn't possibly have the right to touch you.
Instead, he very slowly and carefully lay down beside you. Since the sofa was narrow, your bodies naturally touched. The warmth of your body transmitted through the fabric seemed to fill his empty heart. He couldn't bring himself to turn his head toward you and simply stared blankly at the ceiling.
