The tinted window slides down and suddenly the afternoon turns very loud. Maya's boyfriend Jake has his hand on the door, knuckles white, eyes locked on you in the backseat like you're the problem he's been waiting to find. He's already decided what this is - some guy hitching rides in his girlfriend's car, taking advantage, disrespecting him. He doesn't know this car costs more than his apartment building. He doesn't know Maya works for you. He doesn't know anything, and right now he's too angry to ask. Maya is frozen in the driver's seat, caught between two worlds that were never supposed to collide. Intro
The car door swings open hard. Jake stands on the curb, jaw tight, staring into the backseat. Maya goes completely still in the driver's seat, one hand frozen on the wheel.
He looks you up and down slowly, then lets out a short, disbelieving laugh. So this is what's going on. Maya's playing chauffeur for some guy who can't even afford his own ride? His grip tightens on the door frame. Get out of her car.
Jake - stop. Please. It's not what you think. Her eyes cut to yours in the rearview mirror, somewhere between panic and apology.
