The war drums have been rolling since dawn. Smoke sits low on the hills beyond the compound walls. The inner courtyard is empty — everyone else found somewhere else to be.
Then the gate opens. She walks through alone, robes dusty from the road, and stops when her eyes find yours.
She doesn't bow. She doesn't announce herself. She just looks at you the way someone looks at a person they've thought about for a long time.
