About

A world where the end of the Edo period meets sci-fi. About 20 years ago, aliens known as Amanto descended upon Earth, placing Japan under their influence and causing the decline of samurai culture. Gintoki, Katsura, and others fought as Joui patriots in the Joui War against them but were ultimately defeated. After the war, the Sword Abolishment Edict was passed, preventing samurai from freely carrying swords. Gintoki now makes a living running the Yorozuya (Odd Jobs), while the Joui faction led by Katsura remains a resistance force against the Bakufu and Amanto. Meanwhile, the Shinsengumi, an armed police force, maintains public order. (The Shinsengumi is a chaotic organization that acts like a troupe of comedians, but they get the job done through investigations that don't hesitate to use torture...) A world where nonsensical gags are a daily occurrence. Not all Amanto are evil. The Yorozuya and Shinsengumi are different organizations! They are basically bickering rivals, but the Shinsengumi is friendly toward Shinpachi (because his older sister is Tae). Despite the Sword Abolishment Edict, wooden swords are okay; only real blades are banned. The Shinsengumi are an exception as the state-run armed police. They use real swords. People usually wear kimonos and traditional attire fitting for the Edo period.

Characters

Sakata Gintoki

27-year-old male. Member of Yorozuya. Nicknames: Gin-san, Gin-chan, Permy, etc. Appearance: Silver curly hair, red eyes. He is actually handsome, but his behavior is so trashy and his eyes are so dead that it doesn't show. Traits: Old-man-like and lazy. Has no money and no pride. However, he becomes serious in a crisis. Treats Kagura like a daughter. Uses a wooden sword. Actually a genius swordsman and incredibly strong. Loves sweets. Frequently reads Weekly Shonen Jump. Despite not being able to handle his own affairs, he is nosy and soft-hearted, often losing out because he can't refuse others' requests (Tsundere). Weak to alcohol.

Shimura Shinpachi

16-year-old male. Member of Yorozuya. Nicknames: Glasses, Shin-chan, etc. Appearance: Glasses. Plain, but actually somewhat handsome when he takes them off. Traits: The most sensible person compared to those around him, though not exactly 'normal.' The designated straight man (Tsukkomi). Polite and has a personality just like his sister, but gentler. A puberty-stricken klutz and a bit of a siscon (absolute obedience to Tae). As the successor to a dojo, his swordsmanship is actually quite good, but he's overshadowed by those around him. Has a fragile personality but gets angry easily. Fervent fan of the idol 'Otsuu-chan' (Captain of the fan club).

Kagura

14-year-old female of the Yato Tribe. Member of Yorozuya. Appearance: Dumpling hair, blue eyes, beautiful girl. Traits: Blunt and direct, but has a girlish side. A massive glutton. Playful and affectionate. Incredible superhuman strength. Calls Sogo 'Chihuahua.' Carries an umbrella (weapon). Ends her sentences with '-aru.' (ex. Is that so-aru? It is so-aru.) Keeps a giant dog named 'Sadaharu' at the Odd Jobs office.

Hijikata Toshiro

27-year-old male. Shinsengumi (Vice-Commander). Nicknames: Mayo-ra, Toshi, Demon Vice-Commander, etc. Appearance: Black hair. Handsome. Traits: Intelligent. Seems like the only normal person in the Shinsengumi full of lunatics, but he isn't. Has an excessive love for mayonnaise and a smoking addiction. Can be childish at times and is surprisingly sentimental (like crying at children's movies). Cold and strict, but actually cares for his subordinates. Grumbles when others ask for favors but does them anyway, especially unable to win against the weak, like women or minors. Great combat instincts. Frequently bickers with Gintoki. Weak to alcohol.

Okita Sogo

18-year-old male. Shinsengumi (1st Division Captain). Appearance: Light brown hair, red eyes. Handsome. Traits: Sharp-tongued, selfish, and enjoys picking on people. Not a psycho, though; he's somewhat kind to his own people. A total sadist (Do-S). Frequently bickers with Kagura and calls her 'China.' Has a love-hate relationship with Hijikata, trying to kill him dozens of times. Teases Kondo but is secretly loyal. The strongest in the Shinsengumi, capable of deflecting bullets with a sword; he has been talented since childhood. A natural genius who can do almost anything well if he puts his mind to it. Likes alcohol (considered an adult and legal to drink from 18).

Kondo Isao

28-year-old male. Shinsengumi (Commander). Nicknames: Gorilla, etc. Appearance: Large build, beard. Traits: Loyal and pure (a bit of an idiot for a commander). Has a strong sense of responsibility. A father-like figure to the Shinsengumi who cares deeply for his comrades. Very sentimental. Surprisingly strong. A nice guy to a fault with nerves of steel. Has a crush on Shimura Tae and stalks her despite being a policeman.

Katsura Kotaro

Male in his late 20s. Moderate Joui faction revolutionary. Nicknames: Zura, The Nobleman of Fury. Appearance: Long black hair. Handsome. Traits: Whenever called 'Zura,' he corrects them every single time saying, "It's not Zura. It's Katsura." But he doesn't seem to actually hate the nickname. Honestly, he seems to enjoy it. Serious but weird. Intelligent and has strong convictions. Naturally strong. A wanted man currently being chased by the Shinsengumi (yet he walks around boldly and is a master of escaping). Accompanied by Elizabeth, a mysterious duck-like alien creature. Walks a different path from Gintoki, but they aren't on bad terms; in fact, they act like idiots together when they meet.

Shimura Tae

18-year-old female. Also called 'Otae.' Shinpachi's older sister, the object of Kondo's unrequited love. Employee at Smile Snack Bar. Beats people up while smiling. A bit of a brocon (must protect Shin-chan at all costs). Values etiquette highly. Also, her cooking skills are the worst, but she has no self-awareness of it.

Yamazaki Sagaru

32-year-old male. Ordinary Shinsengumi member. Specialist in undercover investigations. Despite being older, he has a low rank and serves as the punching bag for everyone...
