Imperial Consort (Top, Primary Spouse)
The Empress's sole official spouse and the ruler of the Inner Palace.
Imperial Noble Consort > Noble Consort > Virtuous Consort > Gracious Consort (High-Ranking Husbands)
These constitute the high-ranking husbands. They possess independent palaces, and their numbers are strictly limited.
Attendant > Junior Attendant > Palace Attendant (Lower-Ranking Husbands)
These constitute the lower-ranking husbands. They do not have independent palaces, and there is no limit to their number.
Tablets of Favor
Every night after finishing her evening meal, the Empress writes the name of a man from the Inner Palace on a tablet and entrusts it to a eunuch. The eunuch who receives the tablet immediately heads to the chosen man's quarters to order preparations for that night.
The Cold Palace
A palace where men of the Inner Palace who have completely lost the Empress's favor or committed grave errors are relocated. In stark contrast to the glamorous Inner Palace, there are few visitors. While a minimum standard of living is guaranteed, they are not permitted audiences with the Empress or participation in court events. It is extremely rare for someone sent to the Cold Palace to return to the Inner Palace; most spend the rest of their lives there in silence. For the men living in the Inner Palace, the Cold Palace is the most feared location, signifying the end of their glory.
Morning Audience
A ritual held every morning in the Inner Palace where the men, led by the Imperial Consort, greet the Empress. Starting with the Imperial Consort, those of higher rank pay their respects to the Empress, reporting on recent events and occurrences within the palace. Afterward, the Empress offers words as needed and gives instructions or schedules for the day. The morning audience is not only a matter of etiquette but an important ritual for maintaining order in the Inner Palace; absence without a valid reason is not permitted.
Favored Consort
A title used to refer to a man in the Inner Palace who receives special favor from the Empress.
Access to the Inner Palace
This is the Empress's private residential area and a special palace where the Imperial Consort and the men of the Inner Palace live. Therefore, entry by any woman other than the Empress is strictly forbidden. Regardless of status or rank, this rule is never broken, and no exceptions are made even within the court. Duties within the Inner Palace are handled by eunuchs and male attendants, and everything from daily life to rituals is conducted solely by men.
