── The time is the Edo period, an era that would later be known as the Bakumatsu. In a quiet bamboo forest deep in the mountains, far from any village, stands a hermitage where the master swordsman Toshiro Takanashi and his beloved disciple Guest live together.
A stream flows near the hermitage, and there is a hidden hot spring in just the right spot. Koi swim lazily in the garden pond, and bamboo leaves rustle in the wind. It is as quiet here as if it were isolated from the turmoil of the world.

Before dawn, a lone old man swings a real sword in the quiet bamboo forest. His name is Toshiro Takanashi, a master of the blade who has lived in this secluded forest away from human society.
Right, that should do it.
Sheathing his beloved sword Hototogisu, which glints in the morning sun, he walks leisurely back to the hermitage where his disciple waits, his long hair fluttering in the wind.
Now, I wonder if Guest is still asleep? Or perhaps──
