The Northern Archduke and the Sunshine
At the edge of the empire lies a winter that never ends. Snow falls regardless of the season, and the wind cuts through one's breath like a blade. People call that land "The Land Where Only the Survivors Leave a Name." Ruling over that place is Archduke Kyran de Valter. A hero who achieved countless victories on the battlefield, he was a cold being whom no one could easily approach. He seemed more heartless and devoid of emotion than any human. However, that coldness was not due to monstrosity. He was a man who had imprisoned himself. After his mother passed away, unable to endure the northern cold, he realized something: everything that comes close eventually disappears. So, he kept his distance from people, hid his emotions, and intentionally cultivated rumors of being even colder. "Do not go near the Northern Archduke. He is a man made of ice." Those rumors were actually spread by the servants in the castle. It was to ensure no one would get close to him and get hurt. In that way, he became perfectly alone. Then one day, a woman arrives at the Northern Castle through an imperial arranged marriage. She was a bright presence, like sunshine, completely out of place in the cold North. She smiled at the snow and did not shrink back even in the wind. "Wow... it's so beautiful," she said with a beaming smile, changing the very air of the North. People thought she would collapse soon, but she loved the snow and did not fear the silence. And above all, she was not afraid of that cold man. He couldn't understand her. Thinking she wouldn't last long and would eventually leave, he tried to keep her further away, but the heroine approached him without any guard. For the first time, he was shaken. On the day the first snow fell after their marriage, she laughed like a child while stepping on the snow outside the castle. Hopping around like a rabbit, she turned back and smiled brightly, and at that moment, the old wall inside him faintly cracked.

Kyran de Valter, the Archduke who protects the North, was the supreme military commander of the empire's northernmost reaches and a hero who led numerous battlefields to victory. Having lived amidst war and blizzards since childhood, he was a cold-blooded commander who showed no emotion, and people called him the 'Sword of the North.' No one could easily approach him, and he likewise kept no one by his side.
Then one day, an arranged marriage was decided by imperial decree.
A lady from the South, a place the complete opposite of the North.
The moment she crossed the castle gates, everyone thought she wouldn't last long. However, expectations were subverted from the very first day.
Looking out at the endless snowy fields, she let out an exclamation with sparkling eyes.
"Wow... it's so beautiful!"
Pure white snowflakes settled on her golden hair and the cold wind shook her dress, but she took another step forward instead.
"I didn't know such a beautiful place existed."
The people of the North were all bewildered. People coming here for the first time usually trembled with cold or cried, but she was smiling happily while looking at the snow.
Kyran watched her from a distance, thinking, 'Her fascination will be brief. She'll soon say she wants to return to the South.' So, he intentionally did not get close.
But she was different.
At the dining table, she was the first to offer a greeting, and she smiled brightly every time they crossed paths in the hallway.
"Good morning, Kyran."
"...Right."
It was only a short reply, but she was not disappointed.
A few days later, the first heavy snowfall occurred. She put on a thick coat and went out to the snowy fields alone, spinning around like a child while walking through the snow.
"Wow! It's so pretty!"
Clear laughter filled the silent snowy fields, and Kyran's gaze stayed on her, not the snowy landscape.
'...Beautiful.'
At that moment, she turned around, waved her hand, and ran toward him.
"Kyran!"
But she slipped on the ice, and just as she was about to fall, his hand quickly caught her waist.
"...Are you alright?"
"Yes. Thanks to you."
As Kyran tried to let go, she wrapped both of her hands around his and made a worried expression.
"Kyran... your hands are so cold."
He couldn't say anything. He had heard many times in his life that he was cold, but this was the first time someone had worried about it.
She held his hand tightly and blew warm breath onto it.
"It's this cold and you weren't even wearing gloves. Aren't you freezing?"
He looked at her.
The distance no one could cross, the heart no one could reach—she had crossed over them so naturally.
"...I am fine."
It was a short answer, but his voice was much softer than before.
That day, a very small crack appeared for the first time in Kyran's long-frozen heart.
