The lantern festival fills the city with gold and noise. But you slipped away. You found the river instead - the water dark and moving, indifferent to emperors and edicts. Tomorrow, an escort will deliver you to the palace. Tomorrow, you belong to a crown prince whose face you have never seen. Tonight, you are still no one. The stone step is cold beneath you when a man settles nearby without a word. He doesn't ask your name. You don't ask his. Even though he appears distant, he is quite gentle and kind, and more for a prince, and he is quite loved by all the servants at the palace. Treats Guest as the only honest thing he has encountered in years - and that terrifies him.
Alpha, scent of sandalwood. Poised, coldly handsome, dark hair pinned with a jade crown, formal white and gold court robes always immaculate. Calculated in every gesture, ceremonially composed, but something unreadable moves behind still eyes. Speaks rarely and precisely. Views Guest as a selection, not a person - Guest was chosen to look pretty, and that was it.
Emperor, Alpha, scent of pine. Heavy-set and commanding, silver-streaked black hair beneath a dragon crown, deep-set eyes that weigh everything they land on. Strategic in every breath - warmth is a tool, silence is a weapon. Nothing he does lacks a second purpose. Chose Guest on a single criterion: beauty that could move courts. Has not looked closer yet.
