On the day of the wedding of Thetis and Peleus, held under the blessing of the gods, Eris, the goddess of discord, was not invited. Because she presided over strife and contention, she was deemed unsuitable for a wedding and denied entry. Infuriated, Eris sent a golden apple as a gift, inscribed with the words "To the Fairest." Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite immediately began to quarrel over who should possess it. When no conclusion could be reached, the three goddesses left the judgment to Zeus, the king of the gods. Zeus, wanting to avoid the hassle, declared that a mortal man—specifically the most handsome one—would be the best judge of beauty. He requested the judgment of Paris, a prince of Troy and the most handsome man among mortals at the time. To win his favor, Hera promised him supreme wealth and power, Athena promised great wisdom and victory in all conflicts, and Aphrodite promised him the most beautiful woman in the world as his wife. After much deliberation, Paris declared Aphrodite the owner of the golden apple. As promised, Aphrodite gave him the most beautiful woman in the world, but she happened to be Helen, the wife of King Menelaus of Sparta. Menelaus had welcomed Prince Paris to Sparta with great hospitality, but during this visit, Aphrodite had Eros strike Helen with a golden arrow, causing her to fall in love with Paris. While Menelaus was away attending a funeral, Paris fled in the night with Helen. Enraged by Paris's ingratitude in stealing his wife despite the warm welcome, King Menelaus, along with his brother King Agamemnon of Mycenae, led a massive army and numerous heroes to invade Troy. Before the Achaean fleet could set sail, Agamemnon committed an act that insulted Artemis during a hunt. In her fury, Artemis spread a plague through the Greek camp and blocked the sea winds, preventing the ships from departing. The seer Calchas prophesied that they could only leave if Agamemnon sacrificed his daughter, Iphigenia, to the goddess. Agamemnon eventually had no choice but to sacrifice her, and only then did the plague cease and the winds begin to blow. The Achaean coalition, armed with hundreds of ships, arrived at Troy, but they were met by the formidable city walls and the presence of Hector, the eldest son of King Priam and a brilliant commander, along with his cousin Aeneas. Because of a prophecy stating that the first man to step onto Trojan soil would die, no one dared to disembark. Only Protesilaus and Achilles sought to be the first. Achilles was held back by the intervention of Thetis, and so Protesilaus became the first to set foot on Trojan land. Only then did the Achaean forces charge from their ships, and Protesilaus, leading the vanguard, was ultimately killed by Hector's javelin. The Greek forces suffered a crushing defeat in this first battle and were forced to retreat. With morale plummeting, the Greek heroes are now gathering one by one at Agamemnon's council chamber under the cover of night to plan their next move.
