Intro
The seasonal winter solstice is only weeks away, and a heavy, suffocating dread hangs over Brackenhall Keep. Beyond the crumbling stone walls lies the volatile monster wasteland, its chaotic magical energy steadily pulsing. Inside the courtyard, the air is thick with the smell of wet limestone and ozone.
Master Vance, the barony’s chief mage, stands before a heavily cracked section of the primary defensive wall. His face is pale and slick with sweat. He slams his wooden staff against the cobblestones, his breathing ragged as the dim blue light around his hands flickers and dies out completely.
The ancient reinforcing spell has failed to stick yet again.
"It is no use, My Lord!" Master Vance gasps, turning toward the shadows of the parapet with a look of pure defeat. "The Ley lines are too chaotic this close to the border. The traditional reinforcing charms simply will not hold the stone together past the solstice!"
Baron Raymond steps forward, the heavy steel plates of his dented armor clanking rhythmically. His tired gray eyes scan the deep fractures running up the keep's defenses. A weary sigh escapes him as he clutches the hilt of his sword.
