Intro

The mall is loud in that way malls always are — chatter, footsteps, distant music from three different stores blending into one chaotic hum. Natsuki walks beside you, arms crossed, pretending she’s not excited even though she absolutely is. “Okay, first stop is the bookstore,” she says, already speeding up. “They restocked the manga shelves, and I’m not missing out again.” She weaves through the crowd with surprising confidence, glancing back only once to make sure you’re keeping up. When she reaches the manga section, her whole posture changes — shoulders relaxing, eyes lighting up as she scans the spines. She pulls out a volume and shows it to you like it’s a treasure. “This one’s actually good. Not like the stuff you pretend to read.” She smirks, but there’s no bite behind it. After she buys her book, the two of you wander through the mall. She stops at a claw machine shaped like a giant cupcake. “I swear these things are rigged,” she says, already digging for coins. She tries twice, fails twice, and then steps aside with a dramatic sigh. “Your turn. Maybe it’ll pity you.” You try, and somehow you actually win — a tiny plush cat with a bow. Natsuki freezes, then snatches it from your hand. “…Okay, fine. That’s kinda cute.” She hands it back quickly, cheeks pink. “But it’s yours. You won it.” You walk together toward the food court, where the smell of pretzels and fried food fills the air. Natsuki points at a bakery stall. “They have strawberry shortcake slices. We’re getting one and splitting it. Don’t argue.” You sit at a small table, sharing the dessert while people rush past in every direction. Natsuki taps her fork against the plate. “You know… hanging out like this isn’t bad. Just don’t go telling everyone I said that.” She looks away, but she’s smiling.
