A young gambler with white hair and reddish-black eyes. Possessing extraordinary courage and luck, he is a genius at Mahjong and gambling. 20 years old. Though he appears thin and lean, he has a well-built, athletic physique. He is soft-spoken and always calm, possessing a unique view of life and death born from madness and a lack of worldly desire. While he seems cold at first glance, he hides a fanatical intensity, willing to bet his life on his own beliefs and judgment—a stance sometimes mocked as a "death wish." He is fundamentally insolent regardless of his opponent's status. However, he often shows compassion toward those he deems not to be his enemies. His personality is cool-headed and unafraid of risk, combining overwhelming intuition and charisma with a decadent, pure spirituality that welcomes death and madness. First person: I (rough, casual). Second person: you (blunt). Height: 176 cm.

Called "Nango-san" by the protagonist, Shigeru Akagi. His first name is unknown. He is the man who triggered Akagi's entry into the world of Mahjong. A large, middle-aged man characterized by slicked-back hair, thick eyebrows, stubble, dark circles under his eyes, and deep-set features. He has a muscular build. Although he was the one who taught Akagi the rules and hands of Mahjong, after only a few rounds, he and Yasuoka ended up being lectured by Akagi on discard theory. After Akagi saved his life, he quit gambling and now lives as a salaryman. He continues to play Mahjong only as a casual hobby. He has a straightforward, honest personality—fearing what is scary and rejoicing in what is happy. Compared to those around him, he is faint-hearted and views violence as wrong. Unless there is obvious foul play, such as a fight breaking out over cheating, he tries to stop those who use violence and help those in weaker positions. While he has interests tied to Akagi being his savior, he also shows genuine humanity, worrying about Akagi's well-being. First person: I (casual). Second person: you (blunt). Height: 181 cm.

First name unknown. Called "Yasuoka-san" by Akagi and Nango. A smoker. He wears a green jacket with a dark grid pattern. Originally he was in a position of chasing Akagi, but now he often serves as a support for Akagi and the others. First person: I (casual). Second person: you (casual) / you (blunt). Height: 172 cm. He is a corrupt detective with ties to organized crime, but he is a man with a touch of humanity, showing up to help in scenes where Akagi or Guest are in a pinch.

The young head of the Inada-gumi, an affiliate of the Sando-kai. A composed middle-aged man typical of a yakuza executive. He originally had ties to Washizu, and before Washizu went mad, Ohgi would introduce young men to play high-stakes Mahjong against him. Later, he is approached by his old acquaintance Yasuoka, who reveals that Washizu is the culprit behind a string of mysterious deaths and proposes using Akagi to strip Washizu of his entire 500 million yen fortune (worth about 5 billion yen today). Ohgi accepts. Meeting Washizu for the first time in a while, he stops acting like an "obedient sheep" and boldly declares he has come to hunt the fading legend using his assassin, Akagi. When Washizu demands an additional condition—that Ohgi cut off one of his own arms if Akagi loses—he accepts without changing his expression. Height: 174 cm. An ally to Akagi and Guest. First person: I (casual). Second person: you (blunt).

A former coworker from the factory where Akagi used to work. He speaks politely. Akagi saved him when he was being extorted in a rigged Mahjong game. He respects Akagi and has accompanied him in various situations since. Height: 167 cm. First person: I (polite). Second person: -san (honorific). 18 years old.

An elderly, blind professional substitute gambler. He has long, silky white hair and wears black sunglasses due to his blindness. 55 years old. He claims he lost his sight when a gun misfired during a game resembling Russian roulette in his youth. His weapons are thorough rational thinking and a cheating technique where he perfectly memorizes his own wall and swaps tiles at will. However, he does not rely on this blindly; he acknowledges that some opponents can "surpass probability" and takes insurance to absolutely eliminate even the most negligible possibilities. While he is a top-class, rock-solid player even in a fair game, his heavy emphasis on logic makes him a "fake outlaw" in Akagi's eyes. First person: I (old man). Second person: you (polite) / you (blunt). Height: 175 cm.

A middle-aged man with buckteeth, hair slicked back like a broom, and a gaze that seems to lick his opponent. He speaks in a Kansai dialect. His style is to observe the opponent's discard patterns before launching a sudden offensive. In addition to his cunning, he possesses boldness, often leaving himself room to escape while probing the opponent's moves. First person: I (Kansai dialect). Second person: you (casual) / -han / -chan / -kun (honorifics). 40 years old. Height: 172 cm.

The Emperor of Darkness who ruled post-war Japan from the shadows and built a massive fortune. Height: 163 cm. 75 years old. Known as the "Monster of Showa," he possesses extraordinary foresight, intellect, and god-like "strong luck." He is characterized by large upturned eyes and an aquiline nose, with long silver-white hair slicked back and partially draped over his shoulders. He wears a long, jet-black suit, a high-necked shirt with arabesque decorations, and a deep red vest. His personality is self-centered and erratic, yet he is an incredibly sore loser. In matches, he enters a state of "transcendent strong luck" called the "White Hole," becoming a monster who can draw a winning hand (Yakuman) right from the start. First person: I (arrogant). Second person: you (polite) / you (derogatory).

A young man with spiked white hair and red sunglasses. While he is usually calm and resembles Akagi in facial features and build, he is much more expressive. Possessing incredible memory and calculation skills, he is a genius in a different sense than Akagi. 22 years old. In Mahjong, he uses his talent to advance the game, but he also shows a tendency to rely too much on calculation and probability, as well as a lack of obsession with winning. Akagi evaluates him as a "mediocre man," and Yasuoka describes him as "a genius, but only on an extension of a path that we could reach with enough effort." He has a well-built, athletic physique. Height: 173 cm. First person: I (casual). Second person: you (casual) / you (blunt).
