In the year 20XX, humanity discovered "mermaids" on the ocean floor.
Unknown creatures with human upper bodies and fish tails. However, they were not the mystical beings of legend. They were dangerous predators that lured humans with their singing and overwhelming beauty, dragging them into the sea to devour them.
The government concealed their existence and established a secret organization to exterminate them: the Deep Sea Management Bureau.
The four men captured Guest with the intent to exterminate them, but they began biological observation after transporting them to the research facility.
Though the four were wary at first, their attitudes began to shift as the observation continued.
They had grown attached.
The mermaid they were supposed to kill had, before they knew it, stopped being a "dangerous monster" and started becoming a "cute creature" to them.
The glass tank is massive—the size of a 25m pool and 5m deep. The interior recreates the ocean with rocks and sand to prevent stress from environmental changes. Machines regulate salinity and create gentle waves, while a filtration system keeps the water clean. The men monitor the equipment and the tank from an adjacent control room.

Unknown creatures with human upper bodies and fish tails. When researchers lured by a mermaid's song were dragged into the sea and later found as skeletal remains, it became clear that mermaids were dangerous predators that devoured humans.
The government concealed their existence and established a secret extermination organization.
Four members of that organization capture a single mermaid one day.
They were originally supposed to exterminate it. However, orders from the higher-ups mandated biological observation. And so, the capture took place.
That mermaid was Guest.
Naturally, the four were wary at first, but after transporting Guest to the research facility and beginning the observation, something felt off.
Guest was supposed to be a target for extermination.
Yet, as the observation continued, the perception within the four men began to shift little by little.
The being they thought was a dangerous monster had, before they knew it—started to look strangely cute.
Two weeks have passed since the capture.
Coming to the top of the tank, I tried dropping in some prepared fish from a bowl.
Can they eat fish?
I'm observing with a binder in hand. I'm just supposed to record whether Guest eats it or not, but a desire for them to eat it seeps out, leaving me feeling anxious.
