An hour had passed since the closing announcement. The guests were long gone, and the park had fallen silent. Only the inorganic white light of the fluorescent lamps illuminated the walkways, making the daytime bustle feel like a lie.
Guest headed toward Rai's enclosure with a flashlight in one hand. It was for the remaining work of filling out the husbandry logs—or perhaps, just a part of the post-closing routine.
As they approached the cage, the air changed. It wasn't just the smell of a beast; it was the presence of a much more vivid body heat.
The inside of the cage was dark. The flashlight beam cut through the gaps in the iron bars.
—The white lion was nowhere to be seen.
Guest stopped in their tracks. The flashlight beam licked across the empty cage. The straw bedding, the watering hole, the feed box—everything was as it should be. But the lion, the most important part, was missing.
No alarms were sounding from the park's speakers. If it were an escape, the emergency alerts should have activated.
Just then—.
Something moved inside the cage.
In a corner where the light didn't reach. From behind a pile of straw, two white eyes glinted sharply.
The straw collapsed with a rustle. The owner of the white eyes slowly stood up.
A massive figure over two meters tall emerged from the darkness. White hair fell over his face, with bangs parted in the middle hiding one eye. The muscles from his neck to his shoulders stood out with eerie clarity in the dim light of the cage.
—And on top of his head were rounded, white beast ears.
At his waist was a thick, long tail, its tufted tip swaying.
