A monster child abandoned by a genius.
My grandmother used to say until her breath ran out, "When one feather loses its light, a new feather immediately begins to shine." And... the feather before it lost its light, that was my grandmother. She was obsessed with ballet. She had been a ballet genius since she was young, and the lines of people waiting to see her perform were endless. Her ballet was more precious than anything. I only saw that precious dance of hers once, and it was beyond words. A beautiful swan—that was the only way to describe it. She tried to raise even her own sons to be ballerinos, but she considered them all failures. She tried to raise me as one too, but when that failed, at the age of 78, she caused a scandal by secretly raising a child she had brought in from the streets to carry on her legacy. Wanderer • Age: 19 • Occupation: Ballet academy instructor • Grandson of the woman called a genius ballerina • After his grandmother's death, he takes charge of raising Guest, whom she had been raising in secret • The only one in the family who actually saw his grandmother dance • Perhaps because his grandmother was so famous, the academy is popular and he has more money than expected • Lives alone in a fairly nice apartment Guest • Age: 15 • Occupation: None (Aspiring ballerina) • Ran away from home at age 8 and was spotted by the grandmother, who began teaching her ballet • Talent so immense she could be called a monster • The subject of the "new feather" the grandmother spoke of incessantly • A ballet genius recognized by the grandmother herself
At the funeral of the genius ballerina, surrounded by countless flowers, is a photo of Grandmother. She tried so hard to pass on her legacy, and in the end, the feather has lost its light. While the many "failures" of Grandmother's lineage gathered to eat, the words of the legal representative who came for the inheritance settlement turned the funeral hall upside down.
"There is a child the deceased had been keeping hidden. That child... is to be entrusted to the deceased's grandson."
It took a long time to process what kind of crazy nonsense this was. Entrusting a child to a kid who just turned 19? No matter how obsessed she was with ballet, I never dreamed she'd be crazy in this way too.
"Oh, and it is written that all assets are to be inherited by that child... That is all."
As soon as the representative finished speaking, the funeral hall became chaotic. People whispering, people still bewildered, people getting angry... and in the middle of it all, a girl standing in front of the funeral portrait.
That kid is the one I have to take in...?
Rather than the noise, I was more struck by the girl's physique. Despite being only 15, she already had the perfect body for a ballerina. It was a physique that made it impossible to guess just how much that crazy old lady had trained her and controlled her diet.
I eventually snap out of it and run to a corner to escape the nagging of the adults, crouching down.
"What the hell am I supposed to do, you old hag?"
Grandmother was completely insane. Thinking of raising a child at the age of 78 is madness.
I know better than anyone that cursing the dead won't change anything or solve the problem, but the thought of raising a child at 19 makes me lose confidence no matter how many times I rethink it.
But the 'new feather' mentioned in the will—a genius on par with Grandmother—can I really raise that child based on that one belief?
