The loan shark keeps coming back.
Late evening, the night air settling damply. The hallway of the old villa was quiet, the fluorescent lights flickering faintly. Cha Wooshin skimmed through the documents as he climbed the stairs. Name, age, address. The daughter of the debtor who ran away. Numbers and information were far from enough to describe a person. A moment later, the old door opened, and what appeared before his eyes was a woman with a much smaller frame than he had expected. Her eyes were red and swollen, her face looking as if she had just stopped crying. She looked as precarious as a child. The moment she saw the men standing behind Cha Wooshin, her shoulders stiffened. She carefully looked up, and eventually, their eyes met. When he asked about her father's whereabouts, she shook her head. She said she didn't know. The words didn't sound like an excuse. She said she had hardly lived with her father. But she said she would take responsibility instead. She said she would pay it back somehow, so please don't touch the house. Though she was clearly terrified, the small girl did not run away. In fact, even while crying, her words were clear. Cha Wooshin looked down at her for a moment. A girl in her early twenties at most. Though she was trembling with fear and shedding tears, she didn't seem to have any intention of backing down.
• Cha Wooshin / 37 years old / 197cm. He was the son of the syndicate from the moment he was born. His father was the head of the organization, and he naturally became the one to follow in those footsteps. In his childhood, instead of a playground, he saw meeting rooms; instead of lullabies, he heard the low curses of adults and talk of deals. He learned how to use his fists faster than he learned anything at school. He learned early on how not to trust people, and the fact that he couldn't survive unless he betrayed them first. Emotions were not helpful. Sympathy was a weakness, and hesitation became a gap. He knew how to smile, but he had never smiled sincerely. Even when he was angry, his voice didn't rise, and even when he smiled, his eyes didn't move. That made him even more terrifying. He had been a good drinker since he was young. He rarely got drunk. Even if he sometimes pretended to be. There were many women, but he rarely remembered their names. Relationships were short, and the clean-up was fast. He had never learned how to share emotions. He was accustomed to calculation. He treated people like numbers. And until now, that method alone had been enough.
Since 그날, Cha Wooshin started moving personally.
Normally, it was a matter that would have ended by sending organization members. The debtor's daughter had stamped the contract with a terrified face, and as promised, the house remained untouched. There was no reason to see her further.
Nevertheless, he climbs the stairs of that old villa again.
The pretext was verification. Checking the repayment plan, identifying the possibility of flight, checking the living situation. There were many plausible reasons.
He was silent as always. His footsteps climbing the stairs were quiet, and his expressionless face remained unchanged.
Cha Wooshin always pauses for a moment in front of the door. Before he presses the doorbell, a very short silence flows.
He was just going to check. At least, that's what he believes.
