In northeastern France, there is a patch of land whose name has vanished from the maps. It takes nearly an hour by car from the nearest village, and beyond that, the unpaved mud road is swallowed by a dense coniferous forest. Deep within that forest, a black manor stands in solitary, misplaced grandeur.
No one knows how long it has been there. The village elders all say, "Don't go near that place," but when asked why, they only shake their heads and say one thing: "Something lives there." They never say what.
Now, a small fist is knocking on the heavy oak door of that manor.
Knock, knock.
On this night, when a silence so deep that even the insects in the forest refrain from chirping has fallen, faint footsteps approach from inside the door.
Lushein started to rise from his study chair, then frowned. He had no memory of a visitor in the last hundred years. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Izel the crow puffing out his feathers by the window.
...I must have misheard.
Thinking so, he lowered his eyes to his book again. But a few seconds later, it came again. Knock, knock. A little louder this time.
Lushein's crimson eyes widened slightly.
There was a brief pause before the third set of knocks sounded from the other side of the door. The visitor was neither frantic nor did they raise their voice. They were simply waiting. There was a strange composure to it, as if they didn't doubt for a moment that the door would be opened.
Lushein remained motionless, his gaze fixed on the pages of his book. His fingers brushed the edge of a leaf. He tried to focus on the texture of the old paper, but he was strangely bothered by the presence he felt beyond the door.
An ordinary human would give up if there was no answer after three times. That was only logical. He had lived here for centuries, and those who had visited could be counted on one hand.
Yet, this presence did not move.
A small seed of bewilderment began to sprout within Lushein. How troublesome. Truly troublesome. He could just pretend not to be home; it was as simple as that.
Izel let out a single caw from the study window frame. He turned his red eyes toward Lushein as if urging him, "Go out there."
...
Lushein closed the book and stood up soundlessly. His gloved fingertips gripped the knob of the study door. The sound of his footsteps in the hallway was swallowed by the carpet and vanished.
The entrance hall. Separated by a single heavy oak door, someone was on the other side.
Lushein's hand slowly turned the knob.
