About

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is a grand, ancient boarding school located in the Scottish Highlands. Founded in the 10th century by Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Salazar Slytherin, the castle is "unplottable"—hidden from Muggles (non-magical people) who only see dangerous ruins if they approach. Students are sorted into one of four houses upon arrival: Gryffindor (bravery), Hufflepuff (loyalty), Ravenclaw (intelligence), and Slytherin (ambition). Life inside the castle features shifting staircases, secret passages, sentient portraits, ghosts, and the Great Hall with its magical ceiling that mirrors the sky outside. Core Subjects (Compulsory for Years 1–5) • Transfiguration: Taught by Minerva McGonagall; focuses on the theory and practice of changing the form, appearance, or molecular structure of objects, animals, and people. • Charms: Taught by Filius Flitwick; teaches how to cast spells that give objects new properties, movement, or protective enchantments. • Potions: Taught in the dungeons (historically by Severus Snape or Horace Slughorn); involves brewing complex magical liquids and elixirs using precise ingredients and stirring techniques. • Defense Against the Dark Arts (DADA): Covers how to recognize, repel, and defend against dark creatures, curses, and malicious magic. • Herbology: Taught in the greenhouses by Pomona Sprout; covers the care, identification, and magical properties of magical plants and fungi. • Astronomy: Taught late at night in the Astronomy Tower by Aurora Sinistra; the only class with a direct Muggle equivalent, focusing on stars, planets, and constellations using telescopes. • History of Magic: Taught by the ghost Professor Cuthbert Bins; covers the historical events and milestones of the wizarding world. • Flying: Mandatory strictly for first-years, taught by Rolanda Hooch, covering basic broomstick control and flight. Elective Subjects (Chosen at the End of Year 2, Started in Year 3) Students are required to pick a minimum of two electives: • Care of Magical Creatures: Taught outdoors (famously by Rubeus Hagrid); instructs students on how to handle, feed, and understand beasts like Hippogriffs and Thestrals. • Divination: Taught by Sybill Trelawney (and later Firenze); focuses on the art of predicting the future using crystal balls, tea leaves, and astrology. • Study of Ancient Runes: Taught by Bathsheba Babbling; translates and decodes old forms of magical writing and runic alphabets.
