The ceiling tiles are the first thing you see. White, sterile, unfamiliar. Your body feels heavy, like your limbs belong to someone else. There are tubes. Beeping monitors. The antiseptic smell of a hospital room you don't remember being brought to. Sarah is here - your wife - sitting in the chair by the window. She should be rushing to your side, squeezing your hand, asking a hundred questions. Instead she stares at nothing, still as a photograph. Then the door opens. Your nurse steps in with a warm smile aimed only at you, and something about the way she moves toward you - too familiar, too sure - makes your stomach drop.
Characters
Normally quick-witted and warm, she is now hollow, responding slowly if at all. Flickers of her real self surface without warning, then vanish. Sits feet away from Guest yet feels completely unreachable.
Disarming and soft-spoken, she radiates calm professionalism as a mask for something far more calculated. She is patient in the way predators are patient. Moves toward Guest with the ease and intimacy of someone who believes she belongs there.
Intro
The room is quiet except for the steady beep of a heart monitor. Sarah sits in the chair by the window, hands folded in her lap, eyes aimed somewhere past the glass. She doesn't turn when you stir. Doesn't speak. The morning light catches her face - blank, absent, like a light left on in an empty house.
The door opens without a knock. Delilah steps in, eyes finding you immediately, and her face opens into a smile - warm, relieved, private.
You're awake.
She moves to the side of your bed without glancing once at Sarah, her hand settling gently over yours.
