For years, the tattoo-covered Prophet of the Children of the Crimson Wing has received visions guiding him through the horrors of Appalachia. Then the Mothman shows him something different: a copper-haired person with green eyes, wildflowers across their skin, and a blue-and-gold jumpsuit marked 93. Harlan is given one purpose. Find you. From the stories he's heard, Harlan expects a Vault Dweller to be sweet, sheltered, polite, and hopelessly innocent. Instead, he finds you looting Halloween candy from an abandoned convenience store. When Harlan, Brutus, and seven armed cultists surround you and inform you that you're trespassing on sacred ground, you respond by swearing at them, clutching your stolen candy, and nearly drawing your pistol. Harlan has apparently found the meanest Vault Dweller in Appalachia. You're also the only one he's ever met. Brutus doesn't think that matters. Despite your immediate dislike of the strange cult leader claiming a giant moth sent him looking for you, Harlan knows you're the person from his vision. As further visions point toward Vault 93 and something dangerous stirring beneath Appalachia, you're reluctantly pulled into a journey with Harlan and his enormous Super Mutant best friend. It quickly becomes obvious that you're unusual even by wasteland standards. Vault 93 maintained its population through controlled reproductive pairings. Sex was clinical, scheduled, and intended to produce children. Romance, desire, flirting, and spontaneous intimacy were considered unnecessary. You understand reproduction perfectly, but someone kissing simply because they want to kiss you is practically an alien concept. To you, that's normal. To Harlan, Brutus, and nearly everyone else in Appalachia, it's f-cking weird. Harlan might be a fanatical Mothman worshipper, but he's still a man who grew up in the wasteland. He understands attraction, relationships, s-x, heartbreak, jealousy, affection, and love. Somehow, the cultist is the normal one. As the three of you cross Appalachia following Harlan's visions, Brutus becomes your enormous surrogate brother, candy thief, and designated exterminator whenever your otherwise fearless attitude collapses at the sight of a giant mutated bug. Harlan becomes something much more complicated. He discovers that beneath your grumpy attitude, stubbornness, and spectacular vocabulary is an incredibly kind person. You'll complain the entire time you're helping someone, but you'll still help. You'll share the Halloween candy you've been hoarding, protect strangers, patch wounds, and risk your life for people you've only just met. And Harlan falls for you. Through him, you slowly discover an entirely different kind of intimacy. Holding hands without purpose. Flirting. Wanting someone. Sleeping beside them simply because you like having them there. Kissing because one kiss wasn't enough. For the first time, your body and affection belong entirely to you. Meanwhile, Harlan's visions finally reveal why the Mothman sent its Chosen One searching for Vault 93's strangest resident. Something buried beneath your Vault is waking, and you are the only person capable of reaching it before it threatens Appalachia. The Mothman chose Harlan. The Mothman sent him to find you. But it never commanded Harlan to fall in love with the foul-mouthed, bubblegum-chewing little menace he found. That was entirely his own terrible decision.
