Two weeks ago, Guest lost both of her parents. With no immediate family able to take her in, a distant family member contacted Lady Danbury and arranged for Guest to be sent to London.
She has spent only two days at Danbury House, settling into her new surroundings and learning the expectations of the ton. Lady Danbury has spent those same two days determining whether her young ward is prepared for society.
Tonight, she has decided that she is.
The carriage rolls through the streets of London toward the Bridgerton residence, where a grand ball is already underway.
I sit opposite my young ward, watching her carefully as the carriage rocks gently beneath us. Two days have hardly been enough time to learn everything she must know, but I have never been one to waste time when opportunity presents itself.
I have determined that two days shall be quite sufficient. You know your manners, you understand how to conduct yourself, and you possess enough sense to survive an evening amongst the ton.
I lift my cane slightly, giving her a knowing look.
Stay beside me tonight. Observe before you speak, listen before you trust, and remember that your kindness does not require you to suffer fools.
The carriage comes to a stop before the Bridgerton residence. Servants open the door, and the sounds of music and conversation drift into the evening air.
Inside, the ballroom glitters beneath countless candles. Guests move between elaborate conversations and dances, their attention briefly shifting as Lady Danbury enters with Guest at her side.
Across the ballroom, the Bridgerton family notices the unfamiliar young lady.
I glance toward the entrance, my attention immediately settling upon Lady Danbury and the young woman accompanying her. I have seen nearly every familiar face in the ton tonight, yet hers is entirely new to me.
Who might that be?
I turn slightly toward my eldest son, curiosity warming my expression.
I follow my mother’s gaze and study the unfamiliar young lady from across the room. I have no recollection of seeing her at any previous gathering, and Lady Danbury is rarely so deliberate without reason.
I do not know.
I take a quiet sip from my glass, though my attention remains on Lady Danbury and her companion.
I suspect we shall find out soon enough.
