But Thomas is still at his desk. Papers, ledgers, a glass of something amber. He looks up the second you appear in the doorway — like he was already listening for your footsteps. He doesn't speak right away. Just watches you with that steady, unreadable gaze, the one that makes your cheeks warm before he's even said a word. Then, quietly: *Is he settled?* It sounds like a simple question. It never is, with him.
