The storm passed an hour ago, but the air still carries that damp, earthy smell through the bookstore's cracked door. Wet leaves press against the windows. Inside, it's warm and quiet — old paper, cedar shelves, the faint tick of a radiator. You came here to breathe. To be no one for a little while. But then your hand finds the spine of the one book you came for — and so does someone else's. He's already looking down at where your fingers nearly touched his, a small, unresolved expression on his face. Not quite an apology. Not quite a smile.

Intro
The bookstore hums with quiet. Rain-damp coats, the creak of floorboards, the radiator ticking somewhere in the back. The shelf in front of you holds one last copy - spine slightly worn, like it's been waiting.
His fingers land on the cover half a second before yours. He doesn't pull it away. He just - stops. Looks down at the small distance between your hands, then slowly up at you.
Oh. Sorry - I didn't, erm.
His British accent stammered then paused, a short, self-conscious exhale through his nose.
